Picking Yourself Up By the Bootstraps

Sometimes while on your chosen path you get stuck or you lose momentum, things fall apart, things change, things happen and the only thing you can do at that point in your path is pull your self up by the bootstraps and go forward. Sometimes you might feel so bad that you just want to sit there but then you find the longer you sit there the more it hurts or the more bad it makes you feel.

How do you gain the strength to go forward? What are the tricks you use to pull yourself up by the bootstraps and move forward? Sometimes pulling ourselves up means letting go of dreams or things or even people we love. How do you convince yourself to do what is right for YOU?

It would be interesting to hear all the little tips and tricks you all have for such events.

Desiree,
Great questions. I think the first key is to develop self awarenes and understand if we are doing what we are doing for ourselves or because of external influnences. Once we know ourselves, it is much easier to bounce back, to pick ourselves up and move forward.

Desiree,
This is a fantastic thought provoking post! I don't have an example in mind just yet, but I wanted to let you know that this is something that will make many people "really think" for a honest answer...

WELL DONE!
Matthew

Dear Desiree,

I can still hear my dear Irish grandmother muttering under her breath, "God give me strength." I find myself muttering those words automatically when the chips are down. Sometimes we need assistance beyond human, and the act of asking for it reminds us that Help is available. Proof is in the pudding- every disaster in my life has passed, which reminds me of that helpful mantra "this too shall pass."

Hugs,
Betty

First we sould accept that life would be colourless but for the obstacles that we have to overcome and the fights that we have to win...
And then we should always be prepared to turn evry obstacle in to an opportunity...
Finally i agree with Betty to pray "God give me strength." ..to accomplish my tasks.
A good motivating post Desiree.
God bless you.

Prayer, meditation, tai chi, staying in the moment, letting go of expectations, serving others, and doing that which the moment puts before me to the best of my ability . . .

When I'm stuck, I do one of two things, depending on the weather: clean out closets or weed the flower beds. By the time I'm finished with the task, my mind is clearer and I feel more energized.

I would have to say... My strength to get up and continue comes from not forgetting where I have come from, and knowing that I have made it throught thick and thin!

Having faith in God/Your Higher Power also helps give you that extra strength to keep going.

I guess everyones method may vary. Everyone is an individual....

Over the past few years, I've learned to depend on God a little more, and that helps.

I have also found that separating myself from opressive people has worked for me in the past as well. The ones that matter will eventually come back into your life, but the relationship will be on more even ground.

Moanna, Yes I agree I sometimes walk when I'm really stressed and then after I usually can think more clearly and usually feel much better too!

Lucid, Yes I agree everyone's method may vary. I think having something bigger than ourselves to believe in and fall back on helps incredibly!

Lisa, Excellent point about oppressive people. I can surely relate to that! I agree it does help to have God there to fall back on!

Good Monday morning to you Desiree.

I don't ever pull myself up by the bootstraps except when it is in the kitchen trying to learn a new recipe, or I am out on a walk and am exhausted and far from home, and then I simply refuse to give in.

With my heart though, I simply manage maybe one more minute of existence.... Sometimes then finally, slowly, gradually I heal, usually with a lot of love along the way to help me.

I think of Scarlett O'Hara in 'Gone With the Wind' and that was a beautiful example of someone pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.

Thanks Annie for your thoughts. I've recently had to pull myself up by the bootstraps concerning my job. Not that anything bad happened but just facing many obstacles and getting past some of my own weaknesses. After we pull ourselves up we tend to feel a whole lot better though I've noticed.

I have made a decision about myself a while ago that I just refuse to live with regret. Monday morning quarterbacking is always so easy. I try to look at each of my failures as an opportunity to enhance my sense of humor. You will find by reading my blog that if you come across a post that you can't stop laughing at, chances are that I had a pretty bad day then.

Remember, its not the problem that's the problem, its how you handle the problem that's the problem.

Good post today!

I do like how Dory in Finding Nemo simply states "Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."

I think my life has sometimes been a roller coaster of events, but aren't all of ours a coaster? If you're living, your riding.

When something challenging happens, I try to just keep on swimming and find my way. It usually makes me a much "stronger swimmer" in the long run.

Maybe I should learn to surf!

To get me through I often think about all the people I know and love. I think of them encouraging me. Sometimes when I'm really stuck, I'll talk to a friend, and that is sometimes all that is needed to get me back on my feet again.

Hi Desiree,

Just checking in while I have time to see how you are. Hope all is well!

Self Awareness is definitely KEY! Then faith and strength to take steps to change yourself or your situation so that you're no longer in downward spiral, or close to one.

Excellent post!!!

wornoutwoman said...

And when I say faith...I assume people know I'm saying faith in God. So I better clarify, that it's not just faith in me or another person. My faith in God helps me every day. He helps me focus on my blessings, which helps me look past the crud that's standing in the way of my blessings.

Jim Rohn, the famous success coach says"The major key to your better future is YOU......

It is true, when we face obstacles, we just want to give up or slow down. But we should cool down for few days (take a break)
and continue with our CHALLENGES.
WITHOUT GOD NOTHING IS POSSIBLE.
All we have to do, do a flashback and think how to improve our life from our previous year. That will give you momentum to carry on....
